Launched on May 1, 2016, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a flagship initiative by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The scheme aims to provide free LPG gas connections to women from economically weaker sections, helping them transition from traditional wood and coal stoves to cleaner, more efficient cooking methods.
What is Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0?
In August 2021, Prime Minister Modi introduced Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 in Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh. This upgraded version provides the first refill and stove free of charge. Unlike the previous version, Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 simplifies the application process by requiring only a self-declaration letter as proof of address, making it easier for eligible women to apply.
Objectives of the Scheme
The primary goal of PMUY is to reduce health risks and environmental pollution caused by traditional cooking methods. Many rural women still use wood or coal stoves, which produce harmful smoke that can lead to respiratory issues and other health problems. By providing LPG gas connections, the scheme aims to make kitchens smoke-free and improve the quality of life for millions of women and their families.
